Ugh

I have to take an online training course from the National Cancer Institute showing that I know how to conduct research ethically on subjects that I don't even have!!! My former phonetics professor and I have been trying to do a speech perception study on Hindi stops but that first requires Hindi speakers, which I cannot find. But at least I have this awesome training course to entertain me in the meantime...ooo...syphilis...

Um, call me stupid but what does syphilis have to do with Hindi/research? By the way, are you round in May? I might be coming back...

yeah ... I used to do administrative work for the IRB/CPHS committee back home. They require a whole lot of paperwork for the lamest stuff, like giving someone a survey. I'm sorry.

haha. the online training course that i had to do first gives you a history of treatment of human subjects, and cases where human subjects were compromised or harmed. got to learn about the nazi war crimes and the tuskegee syphilis case, where 400 black men with syphilis in the 1960s signed up to participate in a study under the pretense of getting treatment for their disease, but in actuality the researchers were simply watching the disease run its course on all 400 men.

Actually, the scariest part is that the Tuskeegee syphilis study wasn't done in the 1960s. They started the project in 1932, and it didn't end until 1972 (when it got leaked to the press).

During this entire time, even though syphilis was treatable with antibiotics, the doctors were watching how it killed the 400 men... (who were not allowed to receive any treatment for it)
